Filler

Would just an anchor weight be able to flip an entire boat over..?

God this trick is so complicated and has all sorts of little parts to it how did this old woman come up with all that

Mouri needs to rent at better and more reputable car rental places, I swear to God. The amount of times their car has broken down leading them to solve a murder case

think about it this way, most anchors are thrown over the side of a small boat like that from the front end or the back end for JUST that reason. if waves start to move the boat the shape of the hull will allow the waves to push the boat along till the 'tether' of the anchor's rope gets tighter and the boat 'pivots' on the axis of the rope. thus letting the waves move more smoothly along the hull. just like the wind makes a flag fly until the rope it's attached to stops it moving.

when you put a HOOK over the railing of a small boat right there in the center on one side, with an anchor attached the waves will most often hit the boat broadside. the boat won't easily 'pivot' on the rope. this is the worst 'facing' you can place a small boat with an anchor because the force of the waves hits FLAT against the hull. this will eventually cause the boat to rock 'side to side' higher and higher.

the buoyancy of the boat's hull, weight of the anchor, and the length of the rope are a constant measurement. BUT the HEIGHT of the ocean is NOT constant. as Kogoro explained a Spring Tide raises the level of the ocean significantly HIGHER. the anchor and rope provide a downward 'pulling force' upon the boat which works against the buoyancy of the hull and the height of the ocean.

this one is an easy test if you like to take baths at home. ya got a toy boat? or even a small plastic oblong food container would work. take a piece of tape, a string, and something somewhat heavy, lead fishing weights would work, maybe a small stone statue or a paperweight. something you don't mind getting soaked. now, start to fill the tub and measure the string to be say, 1/4 as long as the tub's water would climb the side of the tub when full. tape the string to the 'boat' on the side in the middle of the edge, not the front or back. tie your 'anchor' to the string and lower it to the bottom of your tub allowing the 'boat' to float in your tub. DON'T fill the tub too fast! splashing from the spigot may get water inside your boat and invalidate your experiment. but the spigot will supply some waves and make your boat rock. as the water gets higher, you'll see your boat rock back and forth and the side where the string is taped will get closer and closer to the water's surface till... GLOOP! your lil boat turns over!

physics in action right before your eyes! :D now take everything apart and enjoy your bath! ;)
